The answer: All links within an AI Overview share a single position in your Search Console reports, regardless of where they appear in the overview panel.

Google's official Search Console documentation says 3 things:

👉 Position: All links in an AI Overview get the same position ranking.
👉 Clicks: Clicking any external link counts as a standard click.
👉 Impressions: Links must be scrolled or expanded into view to count.

This clarification highlights a significant challenge for SEO professionals trying to measure the impact of AI Overviews on their traffic.

Since all links share the same position data, it's impossible to control which specific placements within the overview perform better.

The timing is notable as it comes amid growing skepticism about Google's claims that websites receive more clicks when featured in AI Overviews.

Google Ads just rolled out a highly requested feature to PMax Campaigns that advertisers have been waiting for a long time.

And it’s called 👉 “Device Targeting”

This update lets you choose exactly which devices see your Performance Max ads, addressing one of the biggest frustrations marketers have had with Google's "black box" automation approach.

The new targeting options appear directly in your PMax campaign settings. This allows you to include or exclude these four device categories:

Google AI Overviews have caused MailOnline's searc

Google AI Overviews have caused MailOnline's search traffic to decrease, according to a new data shared by the UK newspaper's SEO director.

Even when ranking #1 in search results, MailOnline loses over half its clicks when an AI Overview appears above organic listings:

👉 On desktop: CTR drops from 13% to under 5% (a 62% drop).
👉 On mobile: CTR crashes from 20% to just 7% (a 65% decrease).

Even more concerning, when MailOnline is actually cited within the AI Overview (the "best possible scenario"), CTR still drops 44% on desktop and 33% on mobile.

The impact can be devastating for specific queries.

MailOnline's Carly Steven warns that Google's experimental AI Mode could make things even worse if it becomes the default experience. Showing a sample result about a missing teenager, she noted: "I don't think anyone is going to be clicking on those links. It just answers it."

While Google claims AI Overviews aren't triggered for hard news and actually benefit publishers. Steven disagrees.

A new research shows Google's AI Overviews are cre

A new research shows Google's AI Overviews are creating a digital echo chamber. Why? Nearly half of all AI answers direct users right back to Google's own search results.

A thorough study by SE Ranking analyzed over 100,000 keywords across five U.S. states and found that -

👉 43.42% of AI Overviews contain links redirecting to Google's search results.
👉 Each AI answer typically includes 4-6 Google links.

This self-referential pattern reinforces what experts call the "walled garden effect." Basically, this keeps users within Google's ecosystem longer before they visit external websites.

Additional findings paint a clearer picture of how AI is reshaping search behaviour:

👉 AI Overviews appear in roughly 30% of all searches.
👉 Users now make 10 clicks within Google before leaving for other sites.
👉 Longer, more specific queries trigger AI Overviews more frequently.
👉 Medium-difficulty keywords (21-40 on the difficulty scale) generate the most AI Overviews.
👉 Keywords with $2-$5 CPC values are most likely to trigger AI answers.
👉 Fashion/Beauty (1.4%), E-Commerce (2.1%), and News/Politics (3.8%) see the fewest AI Overviews.

While Google still drives huge outbound traffic (175.5M visits in March), it's becoming less effective at sending users away compared to ChatGPT.

For marketers, this is a sign of the growing importance of optimizing for visibility within Google's self-contained ecosystem.
